Exploring Colour and Colour Theory with Cordell Garfield

  • Yardley Arts, The Old School Hall The Square, Yardley Hastings Northampton, England, NN7 1EU United Kingdom (map)

As a painter, when I started studying the relationships between colours - which combinations are harmonious and which ones would cause strain or disharmony - the game completely changed for me.

Why study colour theory?

Colour theory is important because it’s crucial to know how to mix your own palette, how to match colours and the reasons why warm and cool shades can affect the mood of a piece.

Come and join my one day workshop where we will be:

  1. Using and breaking down the colour wheel

  2. Exploring and defining hues, tints and shades through colour mixing

  3. Understanding the importance of value, harmony and saturation in colour application

  4. Looking at contrasting and complementary colours and how they affect mood and focus.

Who is this course aimed at?

This course is aimed at all artists whatever your level - from beginners to more experienced.

Throughout the day you’ll be given a series of exercises as well as 1:1 tuition with handouts to support your knowledge on how colour works. You’ll also learn how to match colours more precisely and easily by understanding the science behind it.

Later in the day you’ll be applying your knowledge by doing your own painting studies. Oil paints will be provided for exercises, but all information provided during the day is relevant to painters in all other painting mediums.

By the end of the workshop you will have more confidence with colour and be able to approach your creative process with greater control on the outcome.

Cordell’s colour theory knowledge is superb which is evident in his own work - I’ve been begging him to teach this workshop for some time now, and I’m pleased to see he’s finally given in!

Such an enjoyable way to spend a day. I’m never happy with any of the work I produce, but I can genuinely say I’m pleased with how this turned out
