This 4 week course (4 x 2.5 hour sessions) is aimed at those who already have rudimentary drawing skills with the desire to improve your depiction of trees.
Your tutor, Cathy Burnett, will help you build your drawing and painting skills in how to represent trees in your art, with reference to the approaches of other artists, including Cezanne, Klimt and Doig.
During sessions one to three, weather permitting, we will work outdoors in our sketchbooks or on drawing boards, observing the form, tone and texture of trees in Yardley Hastings village
However, should the weather be inclement, we can work from images in the studio.
When outside, you will be encouraged to take considered photographs for use as reference material.
During the final session, we will work in the main studio using your chosen medium/materials of your choice. Building on skills developed in weeks one to three, you will have the option to include your tree studies in a more formal composition or develop individual studies further, either drawing or painting.
What’s included
Basic drawing and painting materials.
Week 4, or any inclement session, tea coffee and biscuits will be available in the arts centre.
What to bring
Basic drawing and painting materials will be made available each session, including paper, however it would be helpful if you also bring along a sketchbook in a size you prefer.
A sketchbook with a fairly rigid card back will provide support when working without a table.
considerations for working outdoors (weeks 1-3)
You might choose to bring something to sit on (e.g. folding chair or picnic rug) if you prefer not to stand for long periods or sit on the ground.
Ensure you are dressed for the weather, with protection from heat or warm clothing should the weather be unseasonable.
Bring a drink as required so we can maximise our drawing time outdoors.
Week one, we will work in monochrome, with options to explore chalk and charcoal, water soluble graphite, and wax resist. Information on subsequent sessions will be outlined in more detail at the end of each class.
Weeks 2 and 3, you will have the opportunity to introduce colour, and aim to develop naturalistic greens, in either acrylic, watercolour or pastel.
You are encouraged to travel light, but the following are always handy.
A drawing pencil, a biro or fine-liner, watercolours and a brush, a small water pot, and your sketchbook.
Many students have acquired art materials but feel unsure how to use them. If this rings true, then bring these to receive help and advice.
