In this series of 3 workshops, we will be learning multi block method. Over 3 Wednesdays, you will be creating your own colourful (3-4 colours) linocuts using 3 separate vinyl blocks.
In the first session we will learn about what multi block linocut is and its processes. We will remind ourselves linocutting techniques. Then start working on our image using colour pencils. Once we have a finalised image, we will trace and transfer our first layer onto our first vinyl block. We will try to complete carving our first layer and print our first layer by the end of the day.
In the second session, if we have only just finished our first layer, we will print from our first block at the beginning of the session. Then we will trace our image from our first print (to readjust). Once we have clarified our second layer, we will transfer it onto our second vinyl block and start carving our second layer. If we have only just finished our first layer, we will print from our first block at the beginning of the session.
In the last, third session, we will trace our image from our printed first and second layer print. Once we have completed and traced our third layer, we will transfer it onto our third vinyl block and start carving our final layer. Once finished, we will print our final, third layer to complete our multi block linocut print.
We will also learn about other linocut artists using this method, registration technique and paper.

Linocut is a printmaking technique, a variant of woodcut in which a sheet of linoleum or vinyl is used for a relief surface.
You will be using a set of ABIG tools with changeable blades and wooden handles and a type of grey vinyl, Easy Carve, which can be easily bought online. The advantage of this type of vinyl is the contrast between the surface and the carved area. There are many brilliant water based relief inks out there too. There is no smell and absolutely washable with warm water in kitchen sinks! It has never been easier to immerse yourself into linocut printing at home.
