Ever wanted to produce professional studio photos of artwork and portraits?
Well, due to demand we are pleased to announce our new course as an introduction to the fascinating world of studio photography aimed at amateur photographers with some knowledge of their cameras interested in lighting techniques.
During the course we will cover all you need to know about using professional studio lighting for your own projects. It is anticipated that we will be able to offer the main space at Yardley Arts for studio use in the future to anyone who has completed the course.
The workshop is limited to 8 people working in 2 groups to ensure plenty of shooting time.
To include use of all lighting equipment and notes.
Workshop 1 : How studio lighting works and setting up
Learn how to use the studio lighting.
Safety using lights.
How they work and what to look out for.
How to connect your camera to the lights.
Camera settings and why.
Use of the lighting stands.
How to work with a flash meter and without.
Learn high contrast portraits working with one light.
Set up to produce Rembrandt lighting.
Make backgrounds light and dark.
Workshop 2: Working with different lighting modifiers
Safety using lights.
Using soft boxes.
Use of honeycomb grids.
Lighting for beauty shots and use of reflectors.
Feathering the light.
Using 2 light setups
Hair lights.
Metering for multiple lighting.
High key lighting.
Low key lighting.
Workshop 3: How to shoot 2D and 3D artworks
Do bring in any artworks you would like to shoot.
Safety using lights.
Use of backdrops.
Metering the lights.
Camera settings.
Using modifiers.
Use of shadows and angles.
No shadows.
Using 1 and 2 lights.
What to bring
All lighting equipment is provided – just bring your camera, either a DSLR or Mirrorless with a hot shoe connection on the top of the camera for flash.
Please note if you have a Mirrorless camera please make sure you know how to turn off the ”Live View” - check your instruction manuals or get in touch with Andy before the event. This can hold up the session trying to find how to do it so do let Andy know your camera if you’re not sure and he will check.
Any lenses you have, capable of 50mm or more. You won’t need any wide-angle lenses.
Charged batteries.
Memory card in camera.
Notebook and pen.

About the tutor
Andy Eathorne started photography in 1980 after being inspired by filters and making art based images using film cameras.
He went on in later years to work as a photography and art technician in a local college and then to run his own photography studio for 6 years.
Andy has also been running a photography learning group for the last 14 years teaching adults and children all aspects of photography.
The use of all types of lighting has always been a big part of his work.
