We welcome back the talented Cordell Garfield to run another full day’s portraiture workshop. Cordell teaches a step by step process to create a portrait from a photographic reference. The workshop is designed to help both beginners and more experienced artists, and the process will cover:
Using oil paints
The typical proportions of the face
Measuring and mapping out key features from the photograph
The use of line, tone, and value to create the portrait
Cordell will provide supporting handouts as part of the workshop to explain and demystify the technical terms and techniques involved. You will create a portrait that you will be able to take away with you at the end of the workshop.
What is included
Oil paints and brushes
Paper for painting on
Palettes for mixing paint
Low odour solvent
A reference photo can be supplied if the attendee is not supplying their own photo
what to bring (optional)
Paints, brushes, pre-coloured paper/board/canvas (size from 16 x 12 inches to 16 x 20 inches), low odour solvent and mixing palette
Students can bring a reference photograph (minimum size 10 x 8 inches/A4) although this can also be provided by the tutor
Cordell can provide further advice on materials & photographic reference
Students are recommended to wear old clothes, and bring cloth/kitchen roll to clean brushes.

£75 per person with materials supplied

About the tutor
Cordell is primarily an oil painter who uses traditional classical atelier techniques. Portraits and figurative work feature strongly in his art. As a contemporary painter, he uses both the traditional or modern whether it’s technique, subject or even an approach.
Currently, the President of the Northampton Town and County Art Society, Cordell has exhibited extensively within the county and beyond notably at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists. Cordell’s work is held in collections outside the UK and he was awarded the Peoples’ Choice Prize at the Alfred East Gallery as part of their Open 13 exhibition in 2013.
