In this one-day workshop with Tony Hinchliffe, you will learn how to paint the nude figure from life using oils.
Painting the figure from life can be quite addictive! A real brain workout and an amazing experience…
According to Tony: “I usually start by sitting for a few minutes just studying the quiet subtleties in the model’s body language and the mood of the pose. It’s usually enough to evoke a colour idea and rhythm of working, maybe I pick up on something fleeting ... and only then will I start work. My goal is to express what I’m picking up on through my mark-making and colour considerations.”
You will begin with working out a balanced composition by making a few quick charcoal sketches, then Tony will show you how to work up your drawing into an under-painting consisting of tonal values. The next step will be to introduce colour to your artwork - lots of little steps that he will guide you through.
A list of topics that will be covered:
Creating a balanced composition by making a few quick charcoal sketches
Drawing with paint
Using a tinted background
How to create the illusion of realism with just a few brush marks
The balance between detailed and loose brush work
The importance of a background
How to adjust the consistency of your paint and control the drying time
Mixing flesh tones from a limited palette of red, yellow, blues, brown and white
How to manage your palette so your colours stay clean
How to paint material
The illusion and suggestion of detail
Tony will take you through each process step by step, so if you’ve never painted the figure before, this could be just the class for you!
