In this one-day workshop with Tony Hinchliffe, you will learn how to paint the nude figure from life using pastels.
Soft pastel is a wonderfully expressive medium for depicting the nude figure. Combine a vibrant selection of colour with a charcoal under-drawing and you can achieve really interesting artwork.
Sometimes a hint of cadmium red or a suggestion of vanilla in a background can change the whole feel of a drawing. Soft pastel is a great medium if you want to be free from the shackles of trying to chase photo-realism, giving you room to show a little expression in your mark-making and colour considerations.
The great thing about soft pastels is that they allow you to work very quickly. The speed at which one works can differ depending on the model. Some models require a very quick expressive depiction and, on this workshop, Tony will encourage you to work quickly with expression.
As the day progresses you will have some longer poses to consider your approach in a little more detail.
Using tonal paper, we will explore the following:
Blending colours
Skin tones
Drawing with expression
How to depict hands feet and faces
Designing a composition
Shade and highlights in colour
Choosing the right colour
Direct observation
We will be working at an easel standing or sitting - Tony usually stands finding it easier because he can step back every now and again to get a better idea of how his artwork is coming together.
There will be plenty of short breaks for the model and refreshments, as well as a lunch break half-way through the day.
All materials and notes are included so you don’t need to bring a thing or worry about what you need for the course. Just bring a packed lunch - or you can nip next door to the Rose and Crown (we suggest you pre-order).
Tea, coffee and biscuits are available for £1.
